Ho Chi Minh, another city that never sleeps! People are moving all the time up and down the roads and motorcycles like you wouldn’t believe!  Our time in Ho Chi Minh was rather quick this time around, We arrived Monday morning at about 5am into the Saigon Royal hotel which was an absolute shat hole, but non the less a place to sleep.   Monday was a free day so we slept in until about 10am and went to Pho 24 for breakfast!  Seriously, the best Pho in Vietnam, it is clean and very Sanitary. Guaranteed it would pass a health check in Vancouver.  Pho 24 is located right across the street Ben thanh market.

Monday night, our guide took us to a restaurant, the food was absolutely great, but I was extremely annoyed that upon arrival they had only given us the “set menu” to choose from which was way overpriced. I was slightly bothered so I had asked for the normal menu and had several dishes for less money!  - This is one of the downsides I have found to being on tour, is that the guide takes you to restaurants that are usually “organized” and then give them kickbacks or free food for bringing the tour there.

Monday evening, once we were back at our hotel, I had an experience that I have never had before!  A purse snatcher had tried to steal my “man” bag from me. Our group was about 6 of us standing in a circle drinking beer outside of our hotel, without noticing a guy on his motorcycle zoomed past me and grabbed my bag while it was still around my neck. Lucky for me the bag was touch and I had a good reaction and held my bag tight, the guy almost wiped out, lucky for him otherwise he would have got the ass kicking of his life…in any case he didn’t get my bag from me!  I was quite annoyed, angered and disgruntled by this. In fact I was even more so pissed off that the security at our hotel looked and kind of laughed at what happened and our tour guide was also without any reaction which left me feeling like maybe he had something to do behind it… probably not really, but he was one strange cat (our original tour guide, had to leave us on our arrival to Saigon due to a family emergency, so I am referring to the new guide we had)…Just really was strange and didn’t give me a good impression.

Tuesday morning, we had a great tour to the Cuchi Tunnels to learn more about the Vietnam war, it is extremely interesting and really hard to put the events into perspective. All I can say is that it was a real mess and I still have no idea why the war even happened….   I thought for the distance we went out to the Cuchi Tunnels we should have also taken time to visit the Cao Dai temple and also to Nui Ba Den which is really an awesome place!

Tuesday afternoon, I took my wife and mother shopping for shoes to Charles and Keith where they shopped their hearts away. I think my wife got lucky with 4 pairs of shoes!  Makes me happy when she’s happy!

Tuesday evening for dinner, I wanted our group to go to a local Vietnamese Barbecue so I had talked to our guide and suggested that we go there. It seemed that everybody enjoyed the outdoor BBQ experience and the large amounts of alcohol that we consumed!

Wednesday morning the rest of our group left for Cambodia and we headed back to Nha Trang for Good times at the beach!

Sometimes, when you go to a place it is nice to see a familiar face. I almost all my trips to the UK, I make a point to go visit my extended friends in Shepperton, where we usually end up having a night of music, lots of vodka, ciders and ales…I can definitely feel myself this morning! It is always a great time and makes my trip complete! If there is someone you know n a specific country, take time and visit!

Today’s events will include a football match between arsenal and Aston villa, should be super great!

I had no idea that Stella Artois made Cider!

I guess it must have been slow business in Surrey today…Especially officer knob-bob in Surrey, BC. With all due respect, I appreciate police and what they do for our community and society…but sometimes rather than being a knob they need to lighten up and accept that mistakes are more likely to happen to someone who doesn’t regularly visit their city or town, etc.  I am just a little annoyed, so take this post as that – being annoyed!

Today, I got pulled over by an officer in an under cover truck on my drive from Vancouver to Surrey with my wife, on my way to see my Niece and Sister in law.

I was driving down Scott Rd, and then took a right on Old-Yale Road, following my GPS to my sister in laws place, (only the 2nd time going up to their house) so fairly new territory for me. In any case, I was driving behind 2 vehicles. #1. A red truck, #2. A car (not sure what color, but think it was blue). Doesn’t matter really. Well, Driving about 100 Meters behind them , I did not see them stop ahead of me at 124th street nor did I see the stop sign which was at Old Yale Road & 124 Avenue as it was dusk (around 6:10pm) and also because I was paying attention to the intersection lights, as there are light poles, but they are covered up (I guess the lights are not working..?) In fact, I did not at all see the stop sign, as I was more-less focused on the light pulls (not your standard light pulls, but the type that blink for a cross-walk) (See Image, pulled from google maps) – As soon as we did however go through, I said “Oh, Shit, Oops there was a stop sign there, totally didn’t see it). In any case didn’t think much of it after that.

I continued up the road 1km and was following the two other cars in front of me (I noticed that there was a truck behind me). they were going ass slow (about 35KM/hr up the hill – perhaps the first guy should have got a traffic violation for going too slow!). I stopped at the intersection at 128 St & Old Yale and then got pulled over as soon as I went through. I asked what  I did wrong and he told me that I did not stop at the stop sign, referring to 124th street (we are at 128th street where I got pulled over).

Last but not least, he just gave me the ticket, didn’t ask me to sign for it… (not that you have too, but normally you would). The other thing is, his ticket is time for 6:02pm.  The audio recording below is at 6:15 – He is about 10 minutes off on his timings…guess he needs a new clock..

A little annoyed, feeling a little like the officer maybe was being a little bit of a door knob..he even invited me to dispute the ticket – in which I will do, as I rarely ever go to Surrey and am really curious to know why he followed me for 1KM before actually giving me a ticket. He told me I was going 45km/hr…which is good because it was a 50km zone, which means I wasn’t speeding! Whoop whoop! – Further to this, he asked me 3x if I was drunk…Come On, seriously?  Did I look drunk, did I smell drunk, if so why not give me a breathalyzer rather than keep asking me?  - No, I was not drinking today…but I can imagine, I am quite jet-lagged so I probably looked tired as ass… I am assuming it just must have been a slow afternoon for Surrey police today… I am sure they have drug sellers and murderers to catch, rather than some non-local to accidently not see a stop sign.

Picture for you: – Point A, where I failed to stop or see the sign. – Point B, where I got stopped (1km away) – Point C, where I was going.

Just a final note, if you were wondering…yes there was a Tim Hortons near by…just saying…and Yes, I will be disputing this as I have questions and want answers! (I don’t mind paying for my mistake, but I really do want to know why he waited 1KM to pull me over?) – Perhaps it is also not understandable for a Surrey Police officer to understand that someone from Vancouver, may not be familiar with all their roads…we all try to be vigilant, and sometimes can miss a sign..good thing it is basically a “back road”…  (I also have an audio clip of our conversation, but WordPress doesn’t allow me to upload that unless I pay $20…

I was talking to dad yesterday about Grandma Wiebe, he had mentioned that he still had the powerpoint which was made for her back in 2002. I wanted to put it up here, so it wouldn’t be lost :)

Grandma Wiebe Powerpoint

Time has been flying by!  It’s less than two weeks away until I will go to Hawaii to spend some time with friends, family and of course seal my life commitment to Aya. – Looking forward to it to say the least.

I was though thinking the other day about people in my life who I wish could make it to see this day. One in particular is Grandma Wiebe, she was such as an amazing person! She passed away about 11-12 years ago. I remember her so clearly growing up, she always went out of her way for us. Although she was an old lady she always gave us the best of her!  Thinking if there was one person I could bring back to be there it would be her!

Right now, I am happy that my closest family and extended family are able to make it, unfortunately a couple of my friends that I have known since I was pretty much born are unable to make-it but that is ok. Hawaii, is not the closest of places so it does make it a challenge for everyone to come. For people who are coming, I really appreciate the time they are taking, the sacrifices they are making to join us on our day.

Last but not least, there is one Hawaiian, person I would kill to have at my wedding – DOG THE BOUNTY HUNTER! I think he is the greatest, he and his wife Beth. I think it would totally kicker to have them show up at my wedding or the reception.

Other than that, I am looking foward to Hawaii in two weeks time, enjoying the sun, some good beverages and of course the great company of my closest family and friends!
