I’m feeling really happy today! Mom and dad had spent last night at Calgary Airport due to their flight being cancelled from Calgary to Tokyo because of bad weather (Lightning, Thunder, etc.). – They got rebooked and luckily enough got moved from a Tango Fare to a Latitude Fare. I was able to use my Air Canada e-Upgrade credits to get them an upgrade from Calgary (YYC) to Vancouver (YVR) to Hong Kong (HKG). This is pretty much their first time flying business class, so I am extremely excited and happy that they get to be blessed and have an incredible journey to Asia this afternoon. – Thank you Air Canada for treating me and my family so amazing. Your rewards program is brilliant and you have allowed us to Experience great things!

The real funny thing is that both Dad and I have known all day that they got bumped and we have been telling her she will have an emergency exit so she can enjoy a little extra leg room!  We have also been teasing her about sleeping on the plane and having mimosas and enjoying some port and cheese!

Also, a special thank you to Gayle from AC Concierge in Calgary for taking great care of my parents yesterday in Calgary as well as Gina from ACSE Desk for ensuring my parents got rebooked ASAP. I am looking forward to family vacation this upcoming weekend. I will see you on the party bus AC63 on Saturday!

The Airplane is my time travel machine. A couple drinks followed by a few Melatonin tablets. Close your eyes and you have crosses great lands, passed by many cultures that are left still to explore.

Every time that I travel, I am always amazed that I am not in a dream. It just blows my mind that within 8.5 hours from Vancouver that I am in London town. Insane!

This upcoming week should be rather busy. I am in London for a couple days of meetings followed by a Football game on Saturday (Arsenal), after that I will jet off to Glasgow, Scotchland for a conference until Wednesday night before making my way back to Canada on Thursday evening. Should be good!

The UK is one place that I used to never like coming too, but after the 4th or 5th time, it grows on ya! Happy to be here this week, but going to miss my wife! Honey, I’ll be home for almost all of April!

I guess it must have been slow business in Surrey today…Especially officer knob-bob in Surrey, BC. With all due respect, I appreciate police and what they do for our community and society…but sometimes rather than being a knob they need to lighten up and accept that mistakes are more likely to happen to someone who doesn’t regularly visit their city or town, etc.  I am just a little annoyed, so take this post as that – being annoyed!

Today, I got pulled over by an officer in an under cover truck on my drive from Vancouver to Surrey with my wife, on my way to see my Niece and Sister in law.

I was driving down Scott Rd, and then took a right on Old-Yale Road, following my GPS to my sister in laws place, (only the 2nd time going up to their house) so fairly new territory for me. In any case, I was driving behind 2 vehicles. #1. A red truck, #2. A car (not sure what color, but think it was blue). Doesn’t matter really. Well, Driving about 100 Meters behind them , I did not see them stop ahead of me at 124th street nor did I see the stop sign which was at Old Yale Road & 124 Avenue as it was dusk (around 6:10pm) and also because I was paying attention to the intersection lights, as there are light poles, but they are covered up (I guess the lights are not working..?) In fact, I did not at all see the stop sign, as I was more-less focused on the light pulls (not your standard light pulls, but the type that blink for a cross-walk) (See Image, pulled from google maps) – As soon as we did however go through, I said “Oh, Shit, Oops there was a stop sign there, totally didn’t see it). In any case didn’t think much of it after that.

I continued up the road 1km and was following the two other cars in front of me (I noticed that there was a truck behind me). they were going ass slow (about 35KM/hr up the hill – perhaps the first guy should have got a traffic violation for going too slow!). I stopped at the intersection at 128 St & Old Yale and then got pulled over as soon as I went through. I asked what  I did wrong and he told me that I did not stop at the stop sign, referring to 124th street (we are at 128th street where I got pulled over).

Last but not least, he just gave me the ticket, didn’t ask me to sign for it… (not that you have too, but normally you would). The other thing is, his ticket is time for 6:02pm.  The audio recording below is at 6:15 – He is about 10 minutes off on his timings…guess he needs a new clock..

A little annoyed, feeling a little like the officer maybe was being a little bit of a door knob..he even invited me to dispute the ticket – in which I will do, as I rarely ever go to Surrey and am really curious to know why he followed me for 1KM before actually giving me a ticket. He told me I was going 45km/hr…which is good because it was a 50km zone, which means I wasn’t speeding! Whoop whoop! – Further to this, he asked me 3x if I was drunk…Come On, seriously?  Did I look drunk, did I smell drunk, if so why not give me a breathalyzer rather than keep asking me?  - No, I was not drinking today…but I can imagine, I am quite jet-lagged so I probably looked tired as ass… I am assuming it just must have been a slow afternoon for Surrey police today… I am sure they have drug sellers and murderers to catch, rather than some non-local to accidently not see a stop sign.

Picture for you: – Point A, where I failed to stop or see the sign. – Point B, where I got stopped (1km away) – Point C, where I was going.

Just a final note, if you were wondering…yes there was a Tim Hortons near by…just saying…and Yes, I will be disputing this as I have questions and want answers! (I don’t mind paying for my mistake, but I really do want to know why he waited 1KM to pull me over?) – Perhaps it is also not understandable for a Surrey Police officer to understand that someone from Vancouver, may not be familiar with all their roads…we all try to be vigilant, and sometimes can miss a sign..good thing it is basically a “back road”…  (I also have an audio clip of our conversation, but WordPress doesn’t allow me to upload that unless I pay $20…

I saw in the Province (Vancouver) newspaper today that Virgin Atlantic will be starting YVR-LHR flights starting May 24, 2012. I am unsure if this is seasonal or will be a daily operation?  In any case, Virgin Atlantic is one of those Airlines that I have yet to fly. I have been on Virgin America a few times which was absolutely brilliant.  I am excited to see a new airline fly from Vancouver and offer more flexibility and more options when traveling to Europe.  It would be great to see Virgin join the Star Alliance, so that I could start using Virgin Atlantic (or at least try) when I go to Europe…  in any case May 24, 2012 is my 1-year wedding anniversary for my wife and I, so if you want to send me to London for the weekend with my wife on the inaugural flight, that would be sweet!

Did you know you can use your Nexus pass for security clearance while traveling domestically? This morning while going through domestic security at YVR there was a special Nexus line. I was quite curious to see what that was abut, it seems they have made a special line for Nexus members, I guess it is a fairly good assumption that people who hold a Nexus are probably frequent travelers and should know how to properly go through security checks. (pull out electronics, etc…).

I asked one of the works how long this has been in place, he said only a week, I do not know if they also have a special Nexus line for security checks going international, but I would assume they do, if not I guess they are probably rolling them out?

Anyways, I think the special Nexus line is fantastic and will help save me even more time while traveling…less time doing security checks, more time enjoying the airline lounges!

Ok, so I had a fairly eventful Friday evening and Saturday!  My brother came over last night and we had some drinks, played video games (Fifa on PS3).  We woke up in the morning and then headed down-town. I went to the Apple Store and had my 64GB iPad replaced…The screen was loose – on the left side everytime I pushed down on it, it would click…really annoying. Actually, the most annoying part of the whole thing is that I need to re-install everything…although everything is backed up, I still have to replay all the games to get to the same levels where I was at.  Boo Hoo :(

After Apple replaced my iPad, we then took a stroll down to Vancouver convention Centre to see the Flight Centre travel show…As I am always looking for a good deal, I was told that there were 15% off Air Canada flights today!!! I was rather quite excited, as I needed to book a flight to Hong Kong in March – I found a smashing deal already at $798cdn + tax, so I was hoping for a 15% off that..which would have been totally killer!!!  I had a coupon code from Air Canada yesterday for 10% off flights but it had to be used by midnight last night, I wanted the best deal possible so I held off for today…in any case, I walk in and speak to a guy and he tells me to go wait for this one lady…cant remember her name…anyways waited about 20-25 minutres for her and told her what I needed and then she said that the flight was not eligible for the 15% off from YVR-HKG, so as you can imagine I was completely pissed off, ohh yes.. and let her know.. pretty damn frustrating when you are told there is something, but then they say its not…grrr get your damn story straight!

Well took a quick look at the rest of the show…Air New Zealand, Malaysia, Fiji, etc… only looked at Star Alliance Partners and then looked at a couple country booths which interested me :) …I may have found some travel inspiration and go to Malaysia at the end of March for a couple days, looks rather interesting.. I have been to KL before but not to Langkawi or Penang…we’ll see. I got 3 days booked off for holiday time at the end of my business trip, so hope I can explore, rest and experience something great!

When I got home, I played around on multiple travel sites, Air Canada, Travelocity, Expedia, PriceLine, etc.. but ended up buying my great deal on Expedia…So I purchased the flights from YVR-HKG-SIN-YVR(via HKG)… the other portion of my trip I have booked on points HKG-TPE, I guess that will save the company a few bills :) . I like to think that I am a good shopper when it comes to travel and find a weird enjoyment playing around with websites to find the best deal..it’s like a game or kind of like a puzzle, you have the trip planed out, but you have to look at every option from one way flights to multi-leg destinations to multiple return flights…luckily this time, I only got 2 sets of tickets to deal with, which is nice.

Well now that it is booked, I will need to start looking at planning my honeymoon with my sweetness…I really want to go to Africa on Safari in January, but I think that may be pushing the $$$$. I have enough points that I would not be worried about flights, but maybe the other option might be the South Pacific or something…not sure!  Time will tell I guess

In any case, today was a good day – Once again, Apple has proved their warranty is fantastic with no hassles (which I appreciate), and flight centre proved that they are definitely beatable…and in my blunt opinion a lame ass travel company…(sorry if you work for them, but after trying so many times to give them business…just always get crappy results from them…) – I like to think, I am smarter when it comes to travel bookings and creative travel approaches to get the best deal ever!!!

Tonight, I will be dreaming happy thoughts and looking forward a a short flight from HKG-SIN on the amazing and most wonderful aircraft ever!!! the Airbus A380…I rode on it twice before and it is in every way amazing and fantastic…really that is probably the most lamest of excitement, but it sure gets me really excited!!! – Airplane rides are fun!

Well Aloha, I guess…Today is Tuesday, but I got back on Saturday morning from a quick trip to Oahu (Honolulu), Hawaii. Wednesday around 11am, I was just getting really frustrated about Hawaii since we are having our wedding there in May, so I decided to check flights. Flights were extremely reasonable for last minute – around $350 return.  I decided I would fly out of Bellingham, Washington on Alaska Airlines and fly back to Vancouver, BC on Air Canada.   For the booking, Expedia.ca would not let me book at noon as it was five hours before the flight, so I decided to try out Travelocity as it would allow me to book..in fact if I am not mistaken it may have been $10-$15 less than the price Expedia was showing me.

Not realizing it was pro-bowl weekend, I was in for a surprise when booking a hotel – the cost of hotels on websites for a 3* were $150+ some even being $200+ per night. I decided to give my trusty Priceline a try and was able to steal a deal for around $90 per night for a three star hotel – the Ala Moana Hotel which is right beside the Ala Moana Mall.  I was pleasantly surprised with the hotel and although I would not stay there while on vacation I would consider to stay there if I was on business or by myself.

Alaskan Airlines – Bellingham (BLI) – Honolulu (HNL)

Check-in – I am extremely confused with Alaskan Airlines, reason being…on their website they say they are partners with pretty much all the OneWorld airline partners (Cathay Pacific, KLM, Air France, British Airways, etc…), which makes you think they are a OneWorld Partner…So I pulled out my OneWorld status card and jumped in the business class check-in (although, there were only 4 people in front of me in economy check-in), but the guy said they were not one-world.  Well in any case I was sent to the back of the economy line and waited my turn to check-in…They advertise on their website that they are partners with them, so I think they should recognize OneWorld Status… Once I got to check-in, I was kindly greeted and told the flight was on time. I was also able to steal an upgrade to business class :) … The flight was due to take-off at approximately 5:20, however everyone was boarded and ready to go at approximately 5:10 so we left 10 minutes early! SWEET!

The seats in Alaska Airlines Business Class are big comfy leather seats, all in fantastic condition – I am not sure, but I had the impression that the aircraft was relatively new. I believe it was a Boeing 737-800 series. Quiet and comfy! The way I like it. I guess their aircrafts are also now equipped with GOGO inflight internet, however it is land based so flying to Hawaiii I was SOL.  I was still able to get lots of work done off-line and catch up on emails, etc.  The flight attendants on the flight were fantastic, however I thought they were somewhat slow in getting me drinks and ensuring my beer was always full :(

The food was rather quite delicious from the salad to the bacon wrapped shrimp…It hit the spot!  (see pics below).  About two hours before the flight landed, the attendants gave out some paper work for Hawaii customs, and then also did a 3-4 minute blurb about the Alaskan Mileage plan credit card… I thought it was somewhat tasteless to do it at that time, I think that should have beend one at the very beginning of the flight or a little closer to the end of the flight – As the flight is approximately six hours long, people are probably sleeping or in my case I was happy with the silence and felt relaxed.  About one hour before landing the stewardess came one and said something along the lines of being in the Aloha spirit, we are giving free Mai Tais to anybody 21 years of age or older. Since I was in first class I didn’t have to worry about paying anyways, but I took up the offer for a Mai Tai…it was extremely sweet, but still tasted fine (I think its a mix they use)…  Alaska Airlines is a great airline, with good price and would fly them to Hawaii again with no hesitation. – I would really like to see them choose an alliance, stick with it and just tweak a few things…if you can travel with them, they are no frills basic and almost perfect airline in my opinion.. – I don’t care that they do not have an entertainment system…after all now-a-days most people have phones, ipods, tablets, etc. who needs an entertainment system anyways?

Once I arrived in Honolulu, I made my way to Budget rent a car which I also got from my good friends at Priceline.com – I paid about $40 per day, which saved me about $40-$50 in total.  I had a nice full size car – I believe it was a Nissan Sentra. In any case, I was more than happy with the vehicle I got. The check-in was easy and check-out was even easier!  The only issue I had was the car was quite dirty when I got it, the middle console was sticky and also the car had water marks all over it, especially the mirrors which made it hard to see vehicles behind me in the dark.  – All in all it was OK.

While I was in Hawaii for a short two days, I went around and checked out venues and met our priest – he is very interesting and seems like a very kind man. If I am not mistaken he is a Krishna, I do not know much details about the religion or practice, but in any case he seems quite passionate about what he does!  – I would be very passionate too, if I wedded people on a beautiful beach in Hawaii for a living. :)

As far as receptions go, before I went to Hawaii, I was quite set on Roys Restaurant. I went to check out the venue, however there were some things I didn’t like, so I think I will end up choosing something a little different and probably be catering the Coconut club at the Aston in Waikiki.  The food at Roys was fairly decent, but I think it is quite over-priced and perhaps the flavors may be a little too complicated and much. I like to think I have a great palate for food, but there were flavors going round round everywhere! When I travel and when I dine out, I always enjoy a good dessert. My favorite is always a Chocolate Souffle!  I am sure I have had atleast two dozen Souffles or “Chocolate Lava Cakes” around the world, but I have to give it to Roys for #2. This goes really high on the list!  The #1 place was actually in Santiago, Chile at a place called Astrid & Gaston (Which also goes down as my favorite restaurant in the world!).  A few pictures below of food from Roys and the view from Tiki’s.

Hitachino Nest Red Rice Ale Roys Hawaii Appy Roys Hawaii Seafood Roys Hawaii Chocolate Souffle

As a note, I would suggest that if you do go to Hawaii, go to Roys and order the Chocolate Souffle and enjoy a fantastic Hitachino Nest Red Rice Ale, it is superb! (You can save yourself the $$$ on the food and enjoy a fantastic dessert and beverage!)

Last but not least, I have to share with you a few pictures of the Coconut Club at Tikis & The Aston hotel in Waikiki – the venue looks fantastic, but the food doesn’t sound amazing as it is buffet…in any case the view will be splendid and the people who join our wedding will make it a wonderful event!

Last but not least, Hawaii was extremely busy for the two days I was there…lots of running around and doing errands, etc. I flew back on Air Canada.  Air Canada to me, generally is a great airline…well atleast they have a great rewards program if you travel (We will save that topic for another day).

Air Canada – Honolulu (HNL) – Vancouver (YVR)

Check-in at HNL was great, quick and with my Elite status I was able to zip to business class check-in and not worry about waiting in the long long economy line. I did travel in economy class, since I did not plan my trip far in advance I did not get my usual bulk head seat selection. My seat was an isle of 16D and was extremely uncomfortable as it did not recline.  The boeing 767 that Air Canada uses on the Hawaii route is one of their POS aircrafts, no entertainment system, oldy moldy…I was contemplating purchasing an upgrade, but after getting on the aircraft I was glad I didnt since their business class was only big seats and not pods. The pods on almost all of the other Air Canada international flights are amazing!  In any case, I was exhausted and fell asleep for almost the whole flight, so it went by quick and I was ok.

Another thing, the Star Alliance Lounge by United Red Carpet Club was super far from the Air Canada gate…literally about a 10+ minute walk…absolutely ridiculous!  Good thing Honolulu Airport is cool, there really is nothing there, but it is an open air building so it feels like your walking outside. :)

All in all, the trip was a great success and really glad I went to Hawaii for a couple days. It was good to see the place where we will get married, and also help to choose and finalize a place for our reception! I think we will be more than happy with the choices we will make!

A few more pics for ya :)
